Identifying & Engaging with Sources

How is information presented in different types of sources? Why will knowing this help me choose the best sources for my research?

Why should I use Books & Ebooks?

Books/Ebooks

Note: You might hear books & ebooks, especially very narrowly-focused, academic types of books referred to as monographs.

Pros Cons
  • Non-fiction books are typically well-researched and edited, therefore contain highly credible information
  • Can provide a reference list or list of suggested additional readings
  • Can provide a big-picture view of a topic or a very narrow analysis.
  • Typically the author is easily identifiable.
  • Takes a long time to write & publish, not able to be updated easily as times change.
  • Could be self-published, so it's important to evaluate the author & publisher's credentials.
  • Some genres of books, like memoirs & essays, can contain biased, opinion-based information.
  • Typically long, can be hard to figure out the best way to find the information relevant to your needs within the text.
