Creating Research Posters

A guide for creating research posters

What is a research poster?

Presenting the results of your research in poster format happens across almost all academic disciplines at professional conferences. Poster presentations are a great way to start participating in the discourse of your discipline. At W&J we host a poster session at the end of each semester on Scholar's Day where students from many different courses have an opportunity to present their work. Student presenting a poster at W&J Fall 2024 Poster Session

Posters should summarize the results of your research and present it in a visually appealing way to help publicize your work. Typically you will stand by your poster while other attendees at the session walk around and interact with the poster authors. If your poster grabs someone's attention they will stop and talk to you about your work in depth.

Posters can be a mix of text, photos, charts, logos, and other elements. Keep in mind that you want your poster to grab someone's attention as they are scanning multiple posters. You probably have between 3-5 seconds for your poster to catch an attendees eye.

Try to make sure that your poster is readable from a few feet away. You should not try to put everything about your research on the poster, remember you'll be standing there to fill in the gaps.

How do I Make a Poster?

Posters can be created using several different graphic design programs. ITS at W&J has provided directions on My W&J for how to create posters using PowerPoint and Adobe InDesign. You can access those instructions here: https://mywj.washjeff.edu/page/posters (W&J login credentials required).

All W&J students have free access to PowerPoint (as well as other Microsoft Office products) through the college's Microsoft365 license. You can download these programs to your computer directly. Find more information on how to access these programs here: https://washjeff.happyfox.com/kb/section/4/. If you are new to graphic design you may want to stick with PowerPoint to design your poster as you likely already have some experience using this software.

W&J students can access Adobe products, including InDesign, on any computer lab computer on campus. Adobe InDesign is a program specifically for graphic design and will have more capabilities for layout and editing. Here is where you can find information on the campus computer labs and what software is available in each space: https://washjeff.happyfox.com/kb/article/213-lab-software-ay-2024-2025/. Please be aware that not all of these labs are available 24/7 and that you will need to save your work to an external storage device or the cloud as you work on lab computers.

If you choose to use a different software to design your poster make sure that you are setting it up with the correct dimensions for the event you'll be presenting at. For the W&J poster session your dimensions should be 54 inches wide by 42 inches high. Also, you will need to be able to save your file as a PDF in order for ITS to print it so keep that in mind when choosing the software you'd like to use.
