Library Support for Faculty: Course Materials

Available support for faculty

Easy Ways to Make Material Available for Classroom Use

  •  Make maximum use of the library’s electronic resources.
    • Visit the Databases A-Z list or browse by publication title to find articles, ebooks, and more.
    • You can share links to database content in your syllabi or Sakai site. Linking instead of uploading PDFs helps the library track usage and ensure ongoing access.
    • Most database content can be downloaded, saved, or printed for individual research and scholarship uses.
    • Contact your liaison librarian to ask if access options for your course reading list are available through the library.
  • Use Course Reserves.
  • Use Freely Available Resources.
    • Federal government works are not under copyright, and those published before 1926 are in the public domain. Therefore, these materials can be freely used.
    • Consider using open-source textbooks or other open materials. See the library’s guide on Open Educational Resources (OER).
  • Consider Fair Use
    • If you're sharing content that is not from library resources, make sure to evaluate whether your use qualifies as fair use.
    • See our Fair Use guide for more information.
  • Using Films in Class
    • You can show DVDs that you or the library own to enrolled students as part of course instruction.
    • Public showings outside the classroom require a separate license.
    • Note that streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, and others are licensed for personal, individual use only and do not permit public performance or classroom exhibition as part of their standard user agreements.
    • The library has a video viewing room for students to use to watch DVDs that have been put on reserve. We also have portable DVD players that can be checked out.
    • We currently subscribe to three streaming platforms (links below). While AVON is a static collection, you can request streaming materials for your classes to watch through Kanopy and Swank if the library does not already have access to them.
