Data Science (DS) Guide

This guide will introduce you to data resources, as well as how to cite data, work with data, and ask questions about data.

Where can you find relevant books for Data Science?

Call numbers are a book's address on the physical shelf. If you are ever looking for books relating to topics in Data Science, the sections below are good places to start. Not sure where the books are in the library? Check out the library map below or ask at the front desk.

  • QA75.5-76.95: Computer science
  • QA276-280: Mathematical Analysis
  • QA297-299.4: Numerical Analysis
  • QA273-274.76: Probabilities
  • QA76.5 - 76.9.I58: Digital Computers (includes programming languages, computing, databases, human computer interaction, and more)

The Library of Congress classification and subject headings systems are large and complex systems subject to government approval, and as a result, sometimes the process to update the classifications and subject headings to their most current terms, especially those pertaining to race, gender, and sexuality, can be slow. Please feel free to ask a librarian more about how the classification and subject headings systems are structured, their biases, and current efforts to improve the terminology within them.

Journals and Articles

In addition to the journals above to which we have immediate access, there are more Data Science journals available only through the ILL.

Browsing or searching journals is useful when you already have a specific topic/focus for your research. For example, if you are researching slavery you might want to take a look at the journal titled Civil War History.

Using the Find Information drop down menu on the Library's homepage:

  1. Click the Find Journals link
  2. A new window will open with a search box.
  3. Enter the title of the journal
  4. Click Search
  5. Retrieve a list showing all available formats for the journal
  6. For online access click the link
  7. Find print journals in the Current Periodical section
  8. Find microfilm behind the Research Services Desk
  9. Get access to print journals located in storage by completing this form: Bound Journal Storage Request
